I took up the hook

Last night, with nothing to do because of my walking foot incident, I decided to take up the hook and teach myself to crochet.

So I present to you my very first and very wonky Granny Square.  Made with a hook I've now realised is too big and thrifted yarns.

It was nice to finally conquer the humble granny, although I'm still all thumbs and getting frustrated with the fingering.  Tell me those of you who crochet,  should I persist with the "right" technique or should I switch to what's comfortable?

  1. Switch to what's comfortable--the only reason the "right" technique was established was because it looked more feminine back in the day (it is actually not very comfortable at all--as you have noticed). I hold my crochet hook much like I hold a needle when sewing by hand (between my thumb and forefinger). I hope it helps! :)

  2. Thanks Ruth! I'm actually mostly frustrated with my left hand and the thread holding on top of the middle finger, my index keeps creeping up to hold it instead. Good advice though on doing what's comfortable. I just don't want to give myself an injury!

  4. Comfortable sounds wonderful..but I'm a novice so pretty much shouldn't have an opinion on this! I do want to comment on your colour choice though 'cos I love it! I love the orange with the grey.

  5. LOVE it!! i still remember that feeling on conquering the granny square!! I'm not sure what technique you are referring to as right, but i battled with all thumbs and moving the yarn with fingertips instead of letting the hook do all the work....so i persisted with a recommended technique of allowing the yarn to pass over your little finger and then first, and using your hook to do all the work - it's now a breeze, so contrary to others, i may advise you to persist with the "right" technique!

  6. Pretty! I like the orange/grey/white combo.

I'm not much of a crocheter, but you should definitely do what feels most comfortable to you. If it looks the same, I don't think it matters how you got there!

  9. Loving the sea background in ur recent photos. Very calming! The square looks pretty impressive to me. I tried one last week and failed miserably at the first petal bit even. So I look on with great respect!
